× This lecture will explore sexualized performances by women, and the ways that dominant societal beliefs about race and gender inform how audiences see, hear, and respond to women of colour on stage. Ms. Ferris will also reflect on the legendary 1920s music hall artist, Josephine Baker, as a political and sexual performer (the inspiration for the character of Violetta in Manitoba Opera‚Äôs La Traviata).

Speaker: Shawna Ferris, Assistant Professor in Women and Gender Studies at the University of Manitoba.
