× Presenter: Dr. Pamela Orr, Professor of Medicine, University of Manitoba

In a medical text published in 1852, Dr. Richard Payne Cotton wrote “Of all vices, however, none are so apt to lead to consumption as the unnatural or unrestrained indulgence of the sensual passions.” In Italy the expression “tipo Traviata” described what came to be known as tubercular beauty.

This talk will explore the romantic myths of tuberculosis as portrayed in music, literature and visual arts.
